First Impression
Believe it or not, Avalon actually builds even higher lines of luxury models above the Catalina offering, but you could have fooled us. The Michigan-based manufacturer refers to this line as its “stylish and sophisticated mid–range” product line, but everything about this dreamboat feels top-of-the-line to us – from the plush interior and standard features to the 700hp worth of fun in the stern.
Highlights
Available in 11 different layouts, the new Cruise Rear Bench (CRB) floor plan with a flip rear bench might just be a new favorite. Converting the forward-facing stern bench to a rear-facing lounger is a cinch with the push of a button. Plus this layout has even more comfortable options in the bow. The two chaise lounges upfront are extremely comfortable and we love the vinyl colors and the plush quilted pattern as well as the contour of all the furniture on board that truly looks and feels like something you’d have in your living room at home.

The full wraparound windshield ties in the sporty look that connects the two helms with identical captain’s chairs that slide, swivel and recline. There is even a panel that can be placed between the helms to block out the elements on those windy or cooler days.

At the helm are dual Simrad touchscreens powered by CZone, and we love that there is a staggered look to them with the larger one more centered and the secondary digital display off-set to the right. Also part of the console are lighted push buttons, access to the Fusion stereo controls and a small cubby with USB ports inside to charge your phone.

Behind the helm chair is a section with a countertop with divided storage below that leads to the stainless rear gate and the extended swimdeck. Between the twin outboards is a combination of stairs and a ladder for easy boarding along with a flush mount for a ski/tow bar.

Other key features include the electric EX wakeboard tower, a lighted in-floor ski locker and a lockable storage at the co-captain’s helm. Additionally, there is a locking safe-like box below the starboard bench to store your valuables.

Why we love this boat…The only thing that could overshadow the twin engines is the high-end and sporty vibe this Catalina offers with luxurious seating and an automotive-looking helm.
Inspection
The three 25-inch diameter pontoons all have lifting strakes—on both sides of the center tube and on the inside of the exterior ones and is part of the standard offering. Above deck, the rail height varies from 25 inches tall in the bow to 26 inches in the stern and the furniture includes ULTRAFINE touch seat vinyl that’s soft to the touch and extremely durable. The aluminum-constructed seat frames provide plenty of storage below, and the quarter-inch gap between the floor and side panels allows for quick drying and added ventilation.
Just being picky…Available as options, the countertop space behind the helm chair should come standard with a faucet and sink, plus a dedicated trash can below.
Performance
What’s better than putting the throttle down on the new Honda 350hp V8? Twins! With 700hp at our fingertips we reached a top speed in the mid 60s after an impressive zero-to-20 mph time of just over 3 seconds. She’s very responsive, fun to drive, and we were able to dive into some sharp turns with ease.
Final Thoughts
The sporty look that includes a wakeboard tower, twin helm consoles, automotive-looking dash, and dual engines was clearly backed up with its performance. A luxurious thrill ride that is priced well for what you get in return for a high-end model.
