Qwest 22 E-Class Lanai being driven on water

22 E-Class Lanai
First Impression
A covered porch in Hawaii is called a “lanai,” and when you first see the rear-facing bench on the swimdeck you instantly make the connection with the model name. Outside the stern gate as you sit and gaze across the open water, it truly feels as if you are sitting on your back porch while taking in one of the greatest lake views possible.
Highlights
Starting at the composite helm console, despite it being a price-friendly model we were pleased to see the all-digital dash with no analog gauges. The upgraded 9-inch Garmin touchscreen (from a 7-inch Garmin) is centered between two vertical rows of rocker switches on one side, with a small cubby and a USB port on the other. At the helm there is also a phone cradle along with access to the upgraded JL Audio stereo controls. Through the helm door below you can gain access to the console wiring along with a storage cubby that is incorporated into the door.

Speaking of storage, you can upgrade the standard storage cubby to one of several layback options like this tilt-out trash. There are two forward-facing chaise lounges in the bow along with a rear-facing one directly across from the helm. The third chaise is part of the L-shaped seating configuration that includes a recessed lumbar cutout with cupholders and a USB port. Below are double-walled seat bases with a fitted mat inside for extra ventilation.

Out on the back porch, ahem, swimdeck, is the rear-facing bench that we love along with a stainless four-step telescoping boarding ladder and an extra tall stainless ski/tow bar. Other highlights include an optional power Bimini top, snapless mooring cover, upgraded high back reclining helm chair, and optional Phender Pro quick-release receiver and bumper ropes.

Why we love this boat…Despite the extremely comfortable helm chair, the rear bench seat on the swimdeck is where you want to be. The back porch vibe is real on this Lanai.
Inspection
Standard on the E-Class, the Q2 two-tube package includes 25-inch diameter pontoons constructed from .090 gauge aluminum as well as Dometic extreme tilt mechanical steering. There are no lifting strakes on the pontoons, which is common for a two-logged pontoon with a 115hp outboard.

Up top the power-coated rails are a consistent 27 inches tall around the perimeter, which helped earn this Qwest a high family-friendly rating. From inside the bow gate to the rear bench seat there is 15 feet of usable floor space on this 23-footer with plenty of room to walk around.

Performance
Again, for an entry-level type pontoon the optional XPA power assist steering was a welcomed surprise. Paired with a Yamaha 115 V MAX SHO outboard we topped out at 24.6 mph after a zero-to-20 mph time of just over 5 seconds. For a two-logged pontoon she handled well in the flat turns for a safe and comfortable ride.
Just being picky…This E-class is all about providing a quality pontoon at a budget-friendly price, but it did feel a little underpowered with the 115hp outboard.
Final Thoughts
With boat prices continuing to rise, this Qwest coming in as tested under $70K is just what our industry needs. You could add a third pontoon performance package and go for the maximum horsepower the boat is rated for if you’re looking to get a little more speed, but we like the package for the price and feel there is a lot of value to this E-class model with comfortable seating for up to 13 passengers.
