The Middle Child Of Our Industry
As a middle child between two sisters, I can confirm the “middle child syndrome” is real. For those who grew up as the only child in the home who aren’t exactly sure what I’m referring to, the middle child syndrome is the belief that middle children are excluded, ignored, or even outright neglected because of their birth order. I don’t plan on turning this into a therapy session, considering I had a great childhood and I have no complaints about being in the middle.

Instead I prefer to focus on an observation I noticed after spending my summer traveling the country to see firsthand what the top manufacturers have been up to. It’s hard to contribute to this issue’s “What’s New Roundup” if you don’t get out there to see what’s new, right?

FINDING THE PONTOON LIFE
HOW OUR READERS BECAME PASSIONATE FOR PONTOONS
By REBECCA BLACKSON
When I first learned to boat as a teen, it was on my father’s 14-foot Capri sailboat named Windsong. Narrow fiberglass benches ran along both the starboard and port sides and we could sit either on these benches or up on the gunwales (side decks) so our weight could balance out the pull of a strong wind. It was often thrilling, especially with the wind in my face and the spray of the water across the hull. But it was never comfortable.

After a long hiatus from the water, I recently dove back into boating, but this time with an ultra comfy pontoon boat. My kids have space not just to lounge, but walk around, too. My ten-year-old gives it a definite thumbs-up!

Stretchy Overnight Boat Cover
Designed to complement but not replace the heavy waterproof cover that comes with your boat, Blue Covers’ patent-pending Cleat Cover is perfect to use during boating season when you want something quick and easy to put on to protect your boat from debris, droppings, and damaging UV exposure. The stretchable, lightweight, and breathable fabric allows the boat to dry out and protects it from the sun for non-boating days or overnight. By transforming plastic bottles into high performance yarn, Blue Sky Covers are made with recycled, high-performance fiber, giving plastic bottles a second life and keeping them out of our waterways. Not intended for highway travel, the covers are available in four sizes and can be put on in less than 60 seconds. (www.blueskycovers.com)

Hurricane’s Next Level Releases
There’s no better way to kick off our preview of the new models and significant changes that are being made heading into the 2025 year than with Hurricane. While the Indiana-based manufacturer has been dominant in the market for years – this especially is true for the state of Florida where its boats have done extremely well – no one has seen anything quite like its latest offerings.

At the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show a couple of weeks ago, Hurricane was the talk of the convention center with the release of its 24 Center Console as well as its SunDeck 3200. While the 3200 comes from the Hurricane deck boat family, it’s clearly on a whole different level. Its features go well beyond any previous Hurricane offerings, yet it still has the same high-quality vibe and those added touches consumers have come to appreciate from this manufacturer. Expect to see its dominance in the market reach a different segment with this over-the-top cabin model beauty.

High-end KICKER speakers pair nicely on this Barletta

When it comes to comfort, styling, performance, and everything in between, Corey Schaub and his family absolutely love their 2023 Barletta Corsa 25UE. However, since no boat is truly perfect there was one thing keeping their beloved pontoon from reaching perfection status in their eyes. Because of his desire for good tunes while out on the water, Corey wanted to upgrade the stock stereo system that came with his pontoon. When he learned KICKER Marine Audio was releasing a new line of speakers, the Michigan native was ready to go all in.

“I’m always in pursuit of perfection,” he said when asked why he felt it was time to upgrade his sound system. “I was looking for a more refined system and after learning more about the features KICKER is now offering, I knew it was the right fit.”

Recapping The Fall IBEX Show
By Roy Sparks
Manufacturers gathered once again at the International BoatBuilders’ Exhibition and Conference (IBEX) in October despite Hurricane Helene’s best efforts to rock the boat. It has become the place to be for builders to see firsthand the new products, materials, and methods to make their own vessels better. The show is geared toward manufacturers so you won’t see a lot of boats on the showroom floor like you would at a typical consumer-driven boat show. However, this Tampa, Fla., show has become a must-attend event for nearly 5,000 people. As a staff we spent a couple of days able to walk only some of the aisles, and we left wishing we had more time to see it all. Here are some of the key highlights – from a pontoon and deck boat perspective – from the three-day IBEX show.

Stripers
on the pole
Slow trolling live shad or shad-imitating baits is a common way to hook up with striped bass and wipers in the fall.
Stripers
On the pole
By Dan Armitage
One of the ‘gamest’ fish at the end of a line gets especially active in the fall and is among the most widespread. Striped bass and its cousins can be found in water fresh and salt and come in sizes to suit every skill level. From pan-sized white bass to broad-shouldered hybrid “wipers” and up to lunker “‘liners,” members of the striped bass family are famous for putting up a fight far beyond what their size may indicate. When trolling in the autumn from our deck boat, for example, we always know when a white bass has dashed in to take a trolled lure meant for crappie, walleye or saugeye; the rod bends double, and the battle is fiercer than anything expected from the targeted species.

Autumn is prime time to embark on a striper safari across much of their range, where the cooling water temperature is triggering both striped and white bass into feeding mode. Hybrid wipers – white bass/striped bass crosses – are equally active in colder water and offer action through the winter months wherever open water can be found. That includes around warm-water discharges on rivers and reservoirs where the stripers congregate to feed on baitfish that seek the artificial warmth.

Boating Tips and Observations with Sky Smith
What Do You Want In Your Stocking?
Sky Smith Headshot
It’s been quite a year. All around the country there have been storms, floods, hurricanes, fires, and droughts. Quite a mix of weather, making boating in some regions a challenge. In my area, the lake was at flood level, covering parking lots and making the walk to the slips a destination in itself. Dragging coolers and extras became a big workout. I have friends with small children and elderly parents who finally quit using their boat during that time; it was just too hard to get everyone to the pontoon.

But that flood finally passed, and then we had a drought. No rain and record high temperatures. Again, it really has been a tough year for boating.
