First Impression

If you’re scratching your head trying to figure out how Hurricane packed so many features into this 20-footer you’re not alone. With a 14-passenger capacity rating and a wide range of horsepower options up to 200hp, this Hurricane is loaded with features and unlike any other deck boat you’re going to find in this size range.

Why we love this boat….

You won’t find many 20-foot deck boats with 200hp max ratings and a 14-person capacity that come in at this price range. We love the versatility as well as all the options as tested.

Highlights

Just released for 2024, the all-new SunDeck 2050 is built to impress and it starts with the helm console. Two multi-function analog gauges along with a 7-inch Simrad touchscreen anchor the dash with controls below to the JL Audio Ultimate stereo upgrade that includes two tower speakers for an amazing sound system. Also for the captain is a wireless phone charger and a heated/cooled cupholder. A full wraparound windshield ties in the dual helm stand layout; directly across for the co-captain is a second wireless charger and heated/cooled cupholder, as well as a large glove box.

With a goal to maximize every square inch on this 20-footer, we love that both the helm chair and firstmate backrests pivot to create rear-facing lounges with just enough room to stretch out. Two more chaise lounges in the bow provide additional seating options, and a nice added touch are the six USB-C chargers that are located throughout the boat so your passengers can stay charged up as well.

The tower on this test boat was upgraded from the standard aluminum Bimini frame, but after seeing the all-black tower you’ll probably view it as a must-have option. Other features worth noting include the bow and stern telescoping ladders, in-floor ski locker, and snap-in Marine Mat flooring.

Closer Look

The full fiberglass stringers are the backbone of this Hurricane deck boat, and the integrated system works to control the flex in the hull and provide exceptional support. The gel coat work throughout the boat – both inside and out – is beautifully executed, as is the overall construction and craftsmanship work. Inside the boat as you step down there is over 10 feet of floor space inside with the large bow and stern platforms accounting for the rest of the 20-foot, 6-inch overall length.

Just being picky…

There’s minimal room in the bow lounges to fully stretch out, so despite the quality construction justifying the 14-person capacity, you probably don’t have enough room to comfortably seat that many passengers.

Throttle Down

We were able to dive into some sharp turns with this Hurricane that handles exceptionally well. Powered with a Mercury 200hp outboard, we reached top speeds in the mid 40 mph range with a zero-to-20 mph time of just 5.2 seconds. This proven modified V-hull provides a smooth running surface that allowed us to fly across the water for an exhilarating ride.

The deadrise angle of 15 degrees and the boat’s shallow draft of just 12 inches provide plenty of versatility with how this boat can be enjoyed. And with the optional Mercury drive-by-wire system combined with hydraulic SeaStar steering, she’s extremely easy and fun to drive.

The engineers at Hurricane must have put in a little overtime on this new model as it truly is amazing how well the space is used on this SunDeck 2050.
