Honda teams up with Premier at THE international show
Our PDB Tested section is compiled of pontoon and deck boats, new products, gear, tools, aftermarket accessories and more. Simply put, if it can be tested and it applies to our favorite type of boating, you’ll find it in this section. And the one thing each review has in common is they were all tested and evaluated by one or more of our qualified PDB staff members.

With tundra-like temperatures and endless snowfall pounding at least half of the U.S., many boaters jumped at the opportunity in February to get warm and head south for the annual Miami International Boat Show. It doesn’t take much to convince those of us living in sun-starved states to trade in snow boots for flip flops, even if it’s just for a week. Considering the winter we were having, I wouldn’t be surprised if we were the first ones on the plane.

With the new show venues this year there were plenty of boats to discover, yet we had better odds of finding a snowball in Miami than actually seeing them all in just five days. As the show has grown, so has the presence of pontoon boats as we saw plenty inside and out of the Miami Beach Convention Center as well as on the water. Two of our favorite pontoon offerings at the show had a common connection: both were powered with the new Honda BF150 engine. Also worth noting, both pontoons were manufactured by Premier Marine.

We were teased back at IBEX 2021 last fall when the significant redesigns and upgrades made to the Honda BF115 and the BF150 outboards were first announced. It was great news to hear, but as journalists we like to put the throttle down ourselves first before we get too excited about new engines.

Luckily Honda Marine not only had the engines at the Miami show, but they had them in the water as well. We were so anxious to try out these new engines on the Premier pontoons we got caught waiting at the launch ramp for Honda’s Jim Loftus to arrive. We probably came off as a little too eager, but we’re not shy about showing our enthusiasm to try out new engines.

Jim was more than happy to hook us up and he even brought with him David Rothwell, a Premier Marine dealer from Georgia with whom we’ve worked in the past on other boat tests.

Carefree Boat Sales on Lake Lanier is the number one dealer for Premier and David was there to ensure his Premier 250 Solaris RL PTX with a Honda BF150 and the Premier Intrigue 230PTX with twin Honda BF150s were in the water the night before the Miami Show began.

Boatmate
Both Premier pontoons made the long journey of more than 700 miles one way from Atlanta to Miami on Boatmate trailers, a brand David has come to depend on.

“A couple years ago we realized we weren’t offering our customers a trailer that matches our premium product,” said David. “The other thing we saw is a need for better performance. We do a lot of twin engine boats and a lot of boats up to about 9,000 pounds and we weren’t getting the performance we needed out of our trailers.”

David went in search of a better-riding trailer and was excited to work with Boatmate Trailers.

“We partnered with Boatmate and we brought them one of the largest boats we offer, the Escalante, and we left it with them for three months. They built a trailer that is specifically for a 10-foot wide Premier pontoon.

After the 700-plus-mile journey to arrive at the Miami Show, David was even more impressed with Boatmate.

“We traveled on all sorts of road conditions and the biggest thing we see with these trailers is our confidence,” added David. “You just don’t get the flex like you do with other trailers and the ride was extremely smooth.”

Let’s Launch ‘Em
The Premier pontoons were splashed at Shake-A-Leg Marina in Coconut Grove and then we helped get them over to The Sea Isle Marina in Miami to the on-water venue for the show. Jim thought he was doing us a favor by making the boats available, but an opportunity to cruise the Miami skyline as the sun was just starting to set was a perfect way to spend our afternoon the day before the show started.
Rigging Options
As we cruised along the water and took turns driving the boats, Jim filled us in on the details including the rigging options for the new Honda BF150 that include its Intelligent Shift and Throttle (iST) and mechanical control options and both can fully interface with the newly introduced HondaLink Marine. If you’re not familiar with HondaLink Marine it’s actually quite impressive. It’s an integrated smartphone application that provides boat owners with complete, remote monitoring capability and ownership information anytime from anywhere.

“The smartphone app connects consumers to their boats 24/7, no matter where they are located,” explained Jim. “It puts the power of boating information into the palm of your hand.”

The new BF150 (as well as the BF115) includes an industry-leading True 5-year, non-declining factory warranty that is the same on the last day as it is on the first. The new models are available in two color options, Aquamarine Silver and Grand Prix White, and on the boats we were on we got to see both.

“The Honda BF150 high-power outboard marks the newest evolution in the company’s product line, integrating a host of class-leading features and benefits that eclipses competitive models,” added Jim, who is clearly excited about Honda’s latest offering. “It delivers enhanced operation, streamlined maintenance and sleek design.”

Intelligent Shift & Throttle
So what exactly is iST? We got more than just an explanation as we experienced it for ourselves during our cruise to the boat show docks. The Honda iST command and control offers the features boaters are looking for, including control of multiple engines; effortless shift and throttle control; fine tuning of throttle settings at any speed; virtual positioning and anchoring, enhanced docking and slow speed control; return-to-port capability; and simple, easy-to-understand user interface. This system also integrates with Optimus 360 joystick steering, Seaways by Dometic virtual positioning and SeaStation by Dometic virtual anchoring.
Pontoon Power
The twin BF150 Intrigue pontoon was equipped with the full EPS steering and helm system from Dometic 360 with the Joystick Docking Control and SeaStation GPS anchoring system included and you could really feel the power of having twins on the back as well as the ease of maneuverability around the dock. While you could feel the power of twins, the single BF150 outboard on the Solaris held its own. These engines did very well and if we can fly across the waters of Miami on a pontoon, just imagine how well the new outboard will perform on your lake. Equally impressive was how well the Premier pontoons did on the Atlantic too.

Shared Technology
The technology applied to the refreshed Honda BF150 is inspired by the very same technology that powers Honda automobiles, gaining from years of proven Honda engineering, precision manufacturing and reliability. This cross-platform integration of technology, with features such as push-button start and theft deterring immobilizer, illustrates the Honda commitment to high performance, fuel efficiency and environmental excellence for its customers. In conjunction, innovative features and Honda-exclusive technologies make the newly refreshed outboard a popular option for pontooners especially.
Full Range
These latest model upgrades including the BF140 that was also recently released, come on the heels of other significant product upgrades across the Honda Marine high-power and mid-range product portfolio. In 2018, Honda redesigned its flagship outboard motors, the BF200, BF225 and BF250, with major upgrades including progressive restyling, easier maintenance and the second generation of iST for drive-by-wire functionality with joystick control.

Prior to that, Honda Marine also updated the BF40/50 and BF75/90/100 models with a wide range of improvements such as thickening the anti-cavitation plates for durability and repositioning service access points for faster, easier maintenance.

Final Thoughts
It’s probably bad to admit, but at some point the line between being out on a test for work and just out for a late-afternoon cruise with friends got a little fuzzy. We still had a job to do, but being out on the water in February put big smiles on our faces even though we felt a little guilty knowing part of the country would give up their snow shovels and trade places with us in a second if they could. Not that we would, as we didn’t want the day to end anytime soon.
