The evolution of the SunChaser brand of pontoons has been enjoyable to watch. Its latest offering includes a versatile seating area in the stern with high-end touches throughout, providing just a glimpse of what this manufacturer has to offer from its entire lineup.
Highlights
Starting in the stern of the boat, the “SBX” in the model name stands for Swing Back X-Treme and we absolutely love the seating area that includes a three-pedestal table with storage compartments inside the tabletop with two swiveling seats and a rear-facing L-shaped bench for the ultimate conversation pit. The seatback for the bench also pivots forward to create a forward-facing seat, offering yet another way to utilize this space.
SunChaser debuted its ski/tow bar last year which is incorporated into the exterior railing for an artistic look, and we’re still impressed by this design that includes two stern entry gates. It’s a unique way to include a ski/tow and we also appreciate the extended deck that gives you extra room after using the stainless four-step boarding ladder to towel off before coming inside the gate after being in the water.
The raised helm platform is optional, but gives the captain a commanding view from the standard high-back helm chair that slides, swivels and reclines. From this chair the multi-function analog gauges are easily within view on the all-fiberglass helm that leaves room for customization with additional electronics if desired. Other key helm highlights include lighted rocker switches, a lockable glove box and access to the JL Audio stereo controls.
Moving forward, there are two chaise lounges in the bow with a pop-up changing room built into the back of the one on the portside that stands over 5 feet tall when opened, which works well for younger kids. The Teak Weave vinyl flooring ties in well with the soft-touch vinyl used for all the seating. In fact, when you touch the seats, they almost feel like leather.
The exterior includes colored panels that are customizable so you can mix and match the three colors to your specific tastes. The standard black rails match the optional black pontoons for a high-end look and feel. The standard power Bimini is also a nice added touch, making it extremely user-friendly.
With the X-Treme PR25 Performance package you gain a third pontoon with a 60-gallon fuel tank. All three 25-inch diameter pontoons include lifting strakes – on both sides of the center tube and on the insides of the outer ones – along with an aluminum performance shield and Sea Star hydraulic steering.
Performance
The maximum horsepower rating is 300, but we found the Mercury 250hp four-stroke outboard to be plenty as we reached a top speed of over 40 mph at full throttle after a 0-to-20 mph time of just over 4 seconds. She handles well and is a lot of fun to drive.

While the unique seating area in the stern will catch a lot of oohs and aahs at the boat shows, this SunChaser has a lot more to it that we feel a lot of people are going to appreciate. It’s well-built, comfortable and really scoots across the water for a complete package families will enjoy.
