Captain’s Chair
“It’s over 20 years old yet it’s basically listed as being in perfect condition? Whoa, c’mon bro!”

Condition: Excellent?
It’s hard enough searching for a used boat these days without having to deal with owners who apparently don’t understand the difference between “excellent” and “good” when it comes to listing the pontoon’s true condition on their online listings. I know I struggle at the DMV when they make me take the eye test, but I have no idea how some of these boat owners pass any type of eye exam.

Boats are one thing, but I’ve discovered selective blindness and unrealistic listings aren’t just limited to the pontoon and deck boat market. I’ve found listings for used tow vehicles to be just as unrealistic as those for some used boats.

Pack Light, But Pack Right
What to bring on your next boating adventure
By Rebecca Blackson
Ever since I had four kids, the necessary items on my packing lists have grown exponentially. I often feel like I’m playing that game, “I’m going on a boat trip and I’m bringing…” where I end up with a whole alphabet list of must-haves.

Skimping on essentials may leave you unprepared for emergencies on the water, but overloading your boat can take a toll on your performance by slowing you down and hampering your fuel efficiency. (If your dealer promised you a top speed you haven’t been able to reach, extra gear on board might be the problem.) Strike the perfect balance by remembering to pack these essentials in three categories: safety, comfort, and fun.

Playcraft Celebrates With Legacy Edition
By Rebecca Blackson
Celebrating both the company’s founder and their 50th anniversary, PlayCraft Boats created the Legacy Edition Powertoon X-Treme to honor Jim Dorris and the revolutionary changes he made in the pontoon business. As a man who not only loved boats but also loved making them go fast, Jim made giant innovations in the pontoon industry by changing leisurely floating decks into high performance boats capable of impressive speed.

Designed with an eye-catching red, white, and blue theme, the Legacy model pays homage to the American flag and the patriotism that was always so important to Jim. Only 50 numbered models of the Powertoon X-Treme will be produced to celebrate each year the company has continuously been in business since 1974. But each will have the power, speed, and handling that PlayCraft is known for. Ready for lounging on the lake or racing in the Ozark Shootout, the boat features stylish designs, overstuffed seats, RAC-R-FINS, and a triple ‘toon package. Partnering with Mercury Racing which is also celebrating 50 years this year, the Legacy Edition model has Mercury Racing outboards available in single or twin applications.

A look back on boating’s largest show

Back in February the boating industry completely took over the Miami Beach area as the world came together in Florida for the five-day Miami International Boat Show. Each year buyers from around the globe descend upon southern Florida to shop the most comprehensive showcase of the newest boats, yachts, tech, gear and marine innovations. For us, it’s an excuse to break away from cold temperatures and see what’s new that pertains to the pontoon and deck boat world.

Hosted across six locations, there were an estimated 100,000 attendees and the show once again provided a platform for hundreds of debuts, spotlighting cutting-edge marine products and boats. From the pontoon perspective, Avalon, Bennington, Harris, Manitou, Montara, Sea-Doo, Starcraft, Sylvan, Ventura, Veranda and Viaggio each had at least one boat on display with some having boats in the water too. Here are the highlights from what we came across at the show.

The Freedom to Enjoy
Boating
Michiana club thriving on the Great Lakes
By Brady L. Kay
There’s a little spring in her step as Dr. Stephanie Freels rounds the corner of the Indiana marina to the sound of flags whipping in the wind. She’s been looking forward to getting out on Lake Michigan all week and despite the early morning gusts, she walks with determination as she makes her way to her boat. Her strolls down the dock are the best part of her summertime routine, although on this particular August morning the breeze seems to be picking up. Stephanie lives for these boating getaways so a little wind isn’t about to derail those plans, not for this seasoned skipper who feels as comfortable at the helm as she does anywhere.

As she approaches the row of boats, she’s greeted by friendly marina dockhands who have her boat gassed, cleaned and ready for her like they do each time she arrives. She originally considered going out on the Sea Ray deck boat, but her boat of choice today is the Bennington pontoon. Now don’t be quick to assume the Illinois dermatologist owns her own fleet of boats. While she has full access to them, she doesn’t actually own a pontoon, deck boat, center console, or even a sailboat. However, thanks to her membership in the Freedom Boat Club in Michigan City, Ind., Stephanie experiences the best parts of boat ownership without dealing with the maintenance or any of the other hassles.

Twin Outboard Pontoons
Double the power, twice the fun
By Rebecca Blackson
When you’re interested in power and top performance, a twin-engine pontoon is the way to go. New maximum speeds are possible where they could only be dreamed about with a single outboard, and the boats level up in terms of options and performance packages as well. These twin engine models will have you revved up for exciting experiences on the water.

The Ozarks area is one of the biggest recreational boating markets in North America and Beaver Lake was the ideal spot to hold this event. While the area is a popular water destination, nearby Bentonville, Ark., is better known as the first distribution center and home office for Walmart that opened in 1972.

Not all media events are created equal. We quickly realized this when Sea-Doo invited a group of select marine journalists to “the lake house” in Arkansas last fall to be among the first to see the all-new Switch Cruise Limited that was being released for the 2024 model year.

In late 2021, we were one of the first to get out on the Switch series of pontoon boats when they were just being released. The Switch, Switch Sport, and Switch Cruise, ranging from 13 to 21 feet, have taken the industry by storm and the most appealing quality might just be the starting prices ($23,699, $28,999, and $33,199 respectively) that include a trailer that can be towed behind a variety of smaller-sized vehicles.

I just survived another winter season of sport show appearances, where I spend waaaay too much time hanging around the exhibit booths and seminar stages between my own presentations at a dozen fishing expos annually. Doing so helps me keep my finger on the pulse of all things fishing and boating and provides fertile waters for article ideas I can use all season long. I listen as sales folks discuss their latest innovations in boats, motors, accessories and angling options, and actually record some fishing talks by the pros, which I listen to later to develop story subjects.

This past show season, the “it” phrase among avid anglers, at least those who fish from boats, was forward-facing sonar, or “FFS.” Since the technology was introduced in 2018, its use has become as widespread as the controversy surrounding the live-time, fish-watching capabilities that some say give anglers’ using the same an unfair advantage. That’s a discussion for another day.

Power Or Performance?
Sky Smith Headshot

How many of us like high performance vehicles? I grew up in the muscle car era. You know: big engines, wide tires, and loud exhaust. My family had all those things. Even our ski boat was a custom built project. It started with an aluminum V hull and we added a custom interior and a big horsepower inboard outboard. The boat was set up specifically for water skiing. Somewhere we have pictures of it pulling ten skiers behind it.

Even the auto book I did for Motorbooks International was about a Honda Civic customized for improved performance. I improved the suspension, the looks and added a Nitrous Oxide kit for a little added engine performance–not that it was needed. The speed limit on the interstate was still only 70.
