A Worthwhile Rain Delay
For the majority of my life I’ve been promoting the overwhelming number of benefits that boating offers, but even as a passionate and dedicated boater I sometimes need a good reminder. In our region of the country, the start of the boating season was a little rough to say the least. The threat of rain was in the forecast for nearly every day for the last three weeks in May, including a rained-filled Memorial Day weekend.

For the record, when I say rain I’m not talking about a couple of water drops. In fact, one massive storm created a flash flood in our city to the point where the drains were overfilled to capacity with nowhere for the water to go. This backup of water led to flooded basements in my neighborhood as well as stalled cars abandoned in the middle of streets that looked more like mini lakes than roads. You haven’t lived until a truck drives by as you’re standing in knee-deep water helping another vehicle and puts a wake of water over your back. Good times.

BOAT SNACKS WORTH PREPPING FOR
BY BRAEDEN KRIEGER
Some of my favorite memories growing up were waking up early on a summer day and spending hours on the boat with my siblings and parents. Together we would swim, explore islands, fish and try to outlast each other on the tube. Those days felt like they’d last forever, but now as I look back, I can only imagine the headache prepping for them must have been for my mom. I mean seriously: how do you feed three children and a hungry husband when you’re stuck in the middle of a lake?

Sandwiches and chips are fine at first, but after a couple of hours, your diners may start to grumble or complain. This is where my mom shined. She must’ve spent forever combing over Internet forums, constantly coming up with new fun snacks to feed us while on board.

The Ultimate Tool for Freshwater Anglers
Building on the original Zenon spinning reel, Abu Garcia has added a new model to the Zenon spinning selection with the Zenon X. This model fills the gap by offering the flexibility to fish lightweight finesse style baits while also providing the power to handle heavier baits when needed.

Building upon the success of the original Zenon spinning reel, the Zenon X ($299.95) features the same efficient asymmetric aluminum frame, combined with an oversized AMG2 machined aluminum gear system that delivers the perfect balance of weight, performance and durability. (www.abugarcia.com)

Jumping In
Family is now all-in on their Monaco
By Brady L. Kay
Laughter fills the air on this particular summer day as the Gerstlers just happen to have all of their children at their lake home together. This includes daughters Madison and Hannah who attend different colleges in Indiana, their son Sam who is on leave from the Air Force while serving in Germany, and the youngest Ethan who is still in high school. It’s days like this when Steve and Marcie Gerstler know they made the right decision to invest in a Monaco pontoon from Godfrey Marine.

Sometimes it’s best to just jump in with both feet when you know what you want. For this Indiana couple the decision to buy a pontoon to enjoy with their family was an easy one. They had recently purchased their lake home, the kids had grown up on the water and loved boating, so the couple considered buying a pontoon to be a very logical next step.

Bayliner launches its all-new M19
Bayliner blasted it out of the water at the Miami International Boat Show (or at least made some noise on the convention center floor) with the launching of its newest M-series, the M19. The main goal with the release was to design a boat with simplicity that is to use and maintain, at an affordable price so anyone could have access to enjoy days out on the water. Bayliner clearly checked all the boxes for the 2023 release.

We caught up with Bayliner’s Mike Mercer at the February boat show and he gave us a more in-depth explanation of how the M19 differs from earlier models.

“We redesigned the top of the boat’s layout, while still keeping the M-hull, which continues to give consumers more stability though not needing as much horsepower,” explained Mercer. “This also allows for the M19 to enter shallower areas.”

Growing up in the Midwest with my fishing limited to a local water supply reservoir, the first time I ever hooked a fish that actually pulled back came the summer I was 8 years old. My dad and I would spend most summer Sunday afternoons anchored off a steep bluff, coaxing smallish bluegills and crappies out of the shady pockets created by the ever-eroding shale bank. By mid-afternoon it was routine for my dad to quaff a Weideman beer to wash down the egg salad sandwiches and Ruffles we had for lunch, stretch out on a bench seat and take a nap. I knew that when he awoke or I ran out of bait, whichever came first, the fishing was over. I learned to become a very quiet angler and to cut the final red worms into pieces with my Cub Scout knife to make the bait last longer.

One sultry August afternoon while my pop sawed logs, I lost my last worm piece to a well-placed peck by a belligerent bluegill and was out of live bait. Next to the empty worm carton in the cooler were the remnants of lunch, including Wonder bread crusts I had eaten around and cast aside. I was able to glean a pea-sized ball of white dough from the leftovers, which I wadded onto the size 12 bait-holder hook and cast the bobbered rig up tight against the wall of shale.

When it comes to “real world” testing with a collection of trailer locks, it doesn’t get more real than having to leave your pontoon in the parking lot of a hotel located on the outskirts of Chicago, Ill. It’s one thing when your boat trailer is still hooked up to your tow vehicle, but I decided to unhook and head into the city for the day and left the trailer and boat unattended, hoping they would still be there when I returned. Finding parking in downtown Chicago is hard enough for a full-size pickup truck, but having a 30-foot pontoon trailer behind it makes it nearly impossible, so I didn’t feel I had much of a choice.

On this recent road trip adventure I picked up a Barletta pontoon for the summer in Indiana and made my way back to Idaho, which round trip was around 3,400 miles. I knew there would be some overnight stops on this trip so I planned ahead by researching trailer locks.

After “messing about” with Moeller’s new Gas Walker 14, the portable quick-fill fuel station has become a welcome addition to my boating “stuff.” While it served as a great backup for fueling the family deck boat, as seen in the photo, the portable tank has come into its own as the primary fuel source for our vintage Jet Ski, a 1994 Kawasaki 650 SC side-by-side. We disconnected the Kawasaki’s oil reservoir to allow us to use premixed gasoline, and the 14 gallons of gravity-fed fuel can last us through a weekend no matter where we decide to cruise, especially in off-the-beaten-path waterways we like to explore where fuel docks are not an option.

Rust Stopper

No matter how hard we try to avoid it, rust is a common issue boaters have to deal with. When we see rust on iron, we see a crumbly, reddish brown substance that has formed over time. But rust isn’t just a new color on some metal. It’s the product of a chemical reaction that becomes corroded over time, resulting in rust. As boaters we know all too well that in most cases what causes rust is the presence of water, but that doesn’t mean we’re going to stop boating any time soon.

A couple of months ago, I went in search of a waterproof shoe to kick off the upcoming boating season. I thought after an extensive search I had found a great non-marking grip sneaker for the boat. Turns out, the XTRATUF Kiata is my new favorite everyday shoe, not just for when I go boating.

Valuable Lessons Learned
Sky Smith Headshot
As mentioned before, I grew up in a family boat dealership where at a young age we learned about life jackets, swimming and propellers. For me the whole boat process was just part of growing up. There were lessons learned every time we went to the lake.

For example, I learned how to drive a truck with a trailer and how to back down the ramp. I also know what it is like to get all the way to the lake and realize that you forgot the keys to the boat.
