How Well Do You Know Your Nautical Terms?

Ready to level up your boating game? You have the boat, the gear, and the life jackets, but do you have all of the proper boating lingo on the tip of your tongue? Test your knowledge of common pontoon terms and maritime jargon with the quiz below and you’ll be the smartest boater on the water.
1. Deck
- A bundle of poker cards
- To smack the passenger who switched your music playlist without permission
- Flat surface of a pontoon where the fence, rail, and furniture rests
2. Log
- A tree trunk floating in the water, tempting you to have a log-rolling contest
- Ye olde captain’s record with boring details like barometric pressure
- A single pontoon tube; pontoons have either two or three logs
3. Starboard
- A wakeboard that’s well-decorated
- Right, when in the boat and facing forward
- A nickname for your favorite passenger

4. Playpen
- The area on the pontoon deck inside the fence
- A little cage for small children
- A whimsical writing instrument that lights up and makes noises
5. Holeshot
- When you throw your drink can into the trash in one shot

6. Planing
- Skimming so fast over the water’s surface that your boat feels like it’s flying
- The bow returning to near horizontal after the initial lift of acceleration

7. Rubrail
- A nasty skin condition from holding onto a tow rope for too long
- Special sandpaper used to remove barnacles from the hull
- A rubber strip that runs along the perimeter of the boat to protect it from damage
8. Transom
- A good-looking boat captain; rhymes with handsome
- The back section of the hull where the outboard is mounted
- A wooden crossbar that divides a window into cute cottage-like squares
9. Trim
- The angle by which the outboard is adjusted to improve performance
- Ruffles on the edge of a swimsuit
- Very fit-looking water skier
10. Port
- A place to unload all of your sandy towels
- Left, when in the boat and facing forward
- Sweet wine imported from Treasure Island
11. Aweigh
- Your chosen route through the water
- Deciding if you should have one more cookie
- Bringing up your anchor from the bottom of the lake
12. Draft
- A written guess of how much boat maintenance you’ll need this year
- The depth of the lowest point of the boat when sitting in the water
- Falling off course due to bad steering
13. Knot
- A hopeless attempt to remember what you learned in scouts
- Speed measurement for a nautical mile; one knot is equal to 1.15 miles per hour
- A wad of wet towels, bumper lines, and sweatshirts
